Art for children with cancer
Launch of a generous project by Darmstadt artist Eberhard Malwitz to support paediatric cancer research in Frankfurt
An exhibition at Designhaus Darmstadt from 20 – 29 September 2024 marks the start of a very special project by artist Eberhard Malwitz: he would like to support children’s cancer research at the Frankfurt Foundation for Children with Cancer by selling a large proportion of his works during his lifetime.
When asked about his motivation for donating the proceeds to the Frankfurt Foundation for Children with Cancer, he explains convincingly: “Children in need are particularly close to my heart, because they are our future and our hope. When I was almost 12 years old, I was locked up in a lung sanatorium for nine months. So I know how children feel who have been isolated from life for so long.”
He also sees a connection to his professional activities: the Frankfurt Foundation has been conducting basic research into paediatric cancer for 30 years in order to develop new treatment options for young people with the disease. Malwitz also worked in basic research as an engineer and was also involved in the development of a heavy ion accelerator for irradiating cancer as head of department at GSI. This is now used successfully in the treatment of brain tumours in children, among other things.
The vernissage will take place alongside the celebrations to mark the reopening of the exhibition hall at the Mathildenhöhe World Cultural Heritage Site. A further exhibition will follow from 1 November 2024 in the Open House of the Protestant Deanery Darmstadt.
