The Operetta CLS System: identifying new biomarkers in high-throughput screening

Research in the fast lane

Over 3,000 chemotherapy-resistant cancer cell lines, the Resistant Cancer Cell Line (RCCL) Collection, are stored in the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Tumour and Virus Research (IDL). They all serve one purpose: to identify the mechanisms and processes that cause cells to become resistant to cancer therapies and which alternative therapies can then still be effective.

With the Operetta CLS (High Content Analysis) system, this can be done at high speed: the device works in high-throughput screening (HDS) and can perform biochemical, genetic or pharmacological tests with tens of thousands to millions of substances in the shortest possible time. Precise and automated image acquisition with rapid sample throughput is used in particular to search for new, biologically active substances. Lead structures can then be derived from these in order to develop new drugs. This allows new therapeutic targets to be identified.

Another advantage is the high image quality of the system. The ability to image the interaction of several cells in 2D and 3D opens up new approaches to gaining knowledge. These have a direct effect on the development of new therapies for children with cancer.

The innovative device with its unique analysis software puts the IDL in the fast lane of research. However, the device is not yet fully financed and the acquisition costs are high. We are looking for supporters to help establish this technology at the Dr Petra Joh Research Centre. Please use this link in case of financial support.
